The cheery red and white candy-striped lighthouse in Green Point with its foghorn, affectionately known as “Moaning Minnie”, is well-known for guiding ships along the misty Cape coast. These misty, cool climate conditions develop the Merlot’s unique character, displaying notes of mint and red cherry.

Tasting Notes

NOSE: Bouquet of baking spices, with aniseed, nutmeg, vanilla and fresh mint-chocolate. Prominent prune and delicious dark cherry aromas follow the array of sweet spices, gaining in strength as the wine breathes.

TASTE: A medium- to full-bodied wine with flavours of freshly picked, juicy dark cherries and ripe red-fleshed plums. The juicy fruit driven palate is complimented beautifully by a robust tannin structure, leaving a lingering, balanced and rich aftertaste.

Food Pairing

Lamb’s neck with prunes, lamb roast with rosemary or thyme, mushroom based dishes and Boerenkaas.

This popular range of premium wines honours generations of Nederburg winemakers collaborating with nature to bring you these classically styled, food-friendly wines.

The grapes were sourced from top-performing vineyards situated in the Darling, Cape Town and Stellenbosch wine-growing areas. The vines are grown in granite and sandstone soils with good water-holding capacity, resulting in grapes with a higher natural acidity and resulting freshness. Open vineyard canopies bring about greater sunlight penetration of the grape bunches, contributing to a well-balanced acidity, in turn contributing to better tannin structure and fruit expression as well as deeper colour intensity.

Upfront plum and youngberry with sweet bell pepper and vanilla. Still primary and youthful, and will benefit from a year or two in the cellar to add an extra layer of complexity. An elegant medium-to full bodied with with delucate red fruit and well-integrated wood flavpurs perfectly-balanced with accessible tannins and a satisfying finish.

This wine has a deep ruby colour with a bright hue. On the nose it shows multiple layers of dark fruit such as plum and blackcurrant with a hint of oak spice. The palate is plush, rich and velvety with well- balanced fruit and supple ripe tannins that lead to great ageing potential.
